Hasegawa 1:48 Nakajima B5N2 Type 97 Attack Bomber

Introduction

Hasegawa first produced this fine 1:48 kit of a Nakajima B5N2 Type 97 back around 2001.  Over the years they reboxed this kit with photoedge to allow the modeller to fold the wing as well as reissues with decals for different markings.  Of all the models Hasegawa produced during that time period, the Japanese WWII aircrafts series seemed to received the most attention to details:  The kits of the Imperial Japanese aircraft cockpits are always highly detailed and had the best fit.  That is why I purchased this kit way back when thinking one day I will get to build it.  The time is now to build it.

Painting a PSP Base

Most forward American air strips from WWII to Vietnam were built from the Marston Mat. The technical description for the Marston mat is the pierced steel planking (psp). It was an ingenious solution to quickly build a stable, flat, non-eroding operating surface for aircrafts in forward area where concrete tarmac were not available. The solution was to prefabricate light weigh (66 lbs per piece of plank) steel planks airfield surface which can be lifted and installed on flatten dirty fields by men without the need of machine. One side of the plank had pre-formed hooks with which to latch onto the plank ahead of it. The planks were installed in staggered pattern and the completed surface were strong and flat. It was the forefather to the modern day vinyl plank flooring which even my wife can simply click into place (almost, but still requiring my engineering assistance).

W4783 G-George flew 89 sorties over occupied Europe with No.460 Squadron during a period when most operational Lancasters were shot down before they had reached 20 sorties. Of the 107,085 total sorties flown by Lancasters, 2,687 went missing. Remarkably, G-George brought home its crew, alive from every operation it flew on.

1:48 Hasegawa P-51D – Cripes A’ Mighty 3rd

I started a personal challenge around 2007 to build three Hasegawa P-51D kits all at once as an effort to empty more of my stash of shame. I only got as far as scratch building some cockpit details and filling the wing panel lines with cyanoacrylate glue and then I got distracted by other things.

I bought these Hasegawa 1:48 P-51D kits way back in late 1990. I don’t know why I bought these kits when there was the better Tamiya kit available. Although it was much better than the Monogram P-51D kit it does has its share of faults. The major faults with this kit are the poor fitting nose chin part, poor fitting bottom fuselage seams, and shallow landing gear bay. I’d just have to make the best out of what I got. So…

Perhaps the most famous Grumman Wildcat of all time is the F4F-3 Bureau Number (BuNo) 4031—with the “-3” model being the last of the non-folding winged Wildcat made. As luck would have it, this particular Wildcat became historically significant as it was flown into many battles and became the highest scoring of the F4F-3 Wildcats. 

F4F-3 Wildcat (BuNo. 4031) was originally assigned to Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-211 which subsequently sent its Wildcat fighters, embarked on the USS Enterprise (CV-6), to Wake Island during November 1941. However, due to engine trouble, BuNo 4031 remained aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) until its return to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii—as fate had it, this ferry mission to Wake Island saved Enterprise from the infamous 7 December 1941 attack by the Japanese Imperial…
